Fraudulent Refund Notification Purportedly From The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
RICHMOND, VA Consumers are being urged to watch out for spam email that promises refunds to victims of Internet fraud. The emails, purportedly from the IC3 (Internet Crime Complaint Center) and the government of the United Kingdom, promise refunds of thousands of dollars which are to be sent via bank wire transfer from the "bank of England" once the victim signs a "fund release order." If the recipient fails to sign the order, the perpetrators of this fraud indicate a hold will be placed on the funds and penalties will be applied.

RICHMOND, VA When it comes to getting your tax rebate check, there’s no faster or easier way than direct deposit! That’s the advice contained in spam email, supposedly from the IRS, that’s currently making the rounds on the Internet. The message contains a hyperlink to a fraudulent form which requests the recipient’s personally identifiable information, including bank account information. Failure to complete the form in a timely fashion, the email warns, will delay the issuance of the rebate check.

Dollar Loss from Internet Fraud Hit All-Time High in '07.
RICHMOND, VA According to a report compiled by the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), consumers lost nearly 240 million dollars in 2007 as a result of scams perpetrated over the Internet. That’s an increase of nearly 40 million dollars over the preceding year. Internet auction fraud was by far the most reported offense, comprising more than one-third of all complaints referred to law enforcement.

RICHMOND, VA WheThe announcement of nationwide tax rebates has presented a new opportunity for white collar crime and fraud this tax season. In a telephone- based phishing scam, someone claiming to represent the IRS is calling consumers and telling them they’re eligible for sizable tax rebates if they file their taxes early. The caller then states that he needs the target’s bank account information so the rebate can be directly deposited. If the target refuses, he is told that he cannot receive the rebate.

“Hit-Man” e-mail Complaints on the Rise
RICHMOND, VA – Over the past few weeks, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received nearly 200 complaints from people claiming they were being targeted on-line for assassination. In each instance, the purported ‘hit-man’ offers to leave the intended victim alone if he or she agrees to pay him tens of thousands of dollars.
